Why did no one tell me about Firefly?
That's a silly question. To be honest, I had people telling me about how great Firefly is for several years, but I never really felt compelled to watch. Well, that changed recently. I finally felt ready for it and decided to take the plunge. It helps that it's only one season and a movie, too. I know I don't really have to dedicate a lot of time to catching all of it, but then... I understand the fans really wanted more when it ended. So I started watching, right? I love so many of the little things. There's no sound in space. Love it. The captain is a pragmatist. Annoying person takes someone hostage and leaves themselves open? Shoot them in the head. They wont negotiate and swear to track you across the galaxy? Kick them into the engine and ask their subordinate. There's a realism about the way everyone acts that allows me to suspend disbelief about the fantastical elements. I appreciate that. I hope, in some small way, The Paladin does the same. I'm not so arrogant as to say that my book is as good Firefly, but I do hope that I can convey that same sense of realism in everyone's actions and motives. I like to think that characters like Reagan and Jonathan act in such a natural, realistic way that my readers will be able to suspend their disbelief about the fantastical world that I've crafted. If nothing else, I think I would certainly recommend this series to anyone that wants to incorporate realism into their story. I feel like so many movies and stories today have decided that "realism" means everyone has PTSD and everything sucks about the world. Firefly is a great example of making the world believable without everything being miserable and painful. Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
